Aptar Pharma’s experts explain their approach to eco-design and life cycle assessments towards advancing sustainability in injectable drug packaging.

In their discussion with On Drug Delivery’s Guy Furness, Bruno Morchain and Fabien De Coninck from Aptar Pharma discuss the company’s structured approach to sustainability, focusing especially on injectable drug delivery systems.

Aptar Pharma integrates environmental, social, and economic considerations into its strategy, with a strong focus on employees, communities, and the environment. This commitment is highlighted by Aptar Pharma’s Futurity™ platform of solutions that support a circular approach in the packaging industry.

In injectable packaging, especially when talking about elastomeric components like Aptar Pharma’s vial stoppers and pre-filled syringe components, the proprietary composition of rubber materials and their classification as biohazardous waste present significant challenges that prevent their entry into standard recycling streams. To address these complexities and support the company’s sustainability commitments, the division has adopted initiatives to reduce the environmental footprint and achieve its sustainability objectives, such as landfill-free production processes and utilizing renewable energy throughout its facilities.
