At Aptar Closures, consumer convenience, product safety, and sustainability are behind every innovation we bring. We stay ahead of the market trends to anticipate needs and collaborate with brands to provide packaging solutions that meet the new demands and bring value.

In the beauty and personal care segment, one of the brands’ biggest concerns is getting products of various sizes and viscosities, such as haircare or lotions, to online shoppers safely. Delivering a smooth and pleasant user experience is paramount, which includes ensuring the packaging reaches the buyer intact without contents leaking during transit. These challenges are not new, but the meteoric growth in e-commerce and multi-channel shopping over the past decade has highlighted new aspects that need to be considered.

According to McKinsey & Company’s The State of Fashion: Beauty report, the global beauty market is forecast to reach $491 billion in revenue in 2024. By 2027, that number will likely be over $580 billion, equivalent to a 6% rise annually. The proportion of those sales achieved through e-commerce channels is forecasted to rise from 23% in 2024 to 26% in 2027. Other market analysts predict it will account for an even higher proportion of up to 30% in 2027.

When sending bulk consignments from packer to retailer through the traditional supply chain, primary packaging is securely delivered on a pallet or in a box, only to be separated and individually stacked on shelves at the final retail outlet. Because they are professionally packaged and transported together, the risks of damage and spillage are minimized. In contrast, when we look at e-commerce sales taking place through various websites and social media platforms, each using a different method of dispatch and delivery, the picture is very different. The product now must make the perilous journey all the way from the seller to the consumer with up to nine times more touch points than in a traditional brick-and-mortar shipping model, having to face a rough supply chain that the packages are often not made to endure.

This is where Aptar Closures’ e-commerce capable portfolio and expertise bring value.  One example is our newest Future Disc Top, a fully recyclable*, e-commerce-capable disc top closure for beauty and personal care applications. Designed specifically to withstand the rigors of the e-commerce journey, Future Disc Top comes with an innovative locking/unlocking ring that firmly secures the contents during transit. The closure is compliant with Amazon ISTA-6**, the certification developed by Amazon in partnership with the International Safe Transit Association, meaning it has gone through a very rigorous testing protocol to ensure it can withstand e-commerce shipping challenges.

The robust locking/unlocking ring is simple and easy to twist when opening and closing the bottle, and it will stay securely in the locked position during shipping and handling. This gives both sellers and buyers the confidence that the packaging will arrive intact. Such a special feature is also very useful for on-the-go or traveling needs.

Finally, let’s not overlook the fact that Future Disc Top is fully recyclable when paired with a PE or PET bottle. The mono-material composition will delight brand owners and consumers dedicated to minimizing their environmental footprint through sustainable packaging solutions.
