Using multi-dose nasal spray pumps for intranasal drug delivery

Intranasal drug administration offers a range of benefits for both locally acting and systemic drug delivery, for vaccines and pain relief, for example.

This book chapter provides an overview and introduction to the topic. The history of intranasal drug administration is discussed, and examples of drugs delivered via this route are provided. The evolution of multi-dose nasal spray pumps is examined along with the trend towards preservative-free formulation. Key features and characteristics of intranasal drug administration are also discussed and the range of technology available for nasal drug delivery is surveyed, including solutions for single and double dose delivery and powder-based formulation. Guidance is provided on how to select the drug delivery technology for any specific application, formulation ingredients and their use, and performance parameters that can be usefully measured.
