Aptar Pharma ETFE Film Coated Syringe Plungers Protect Sensitive Injectables

Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) film-coated closure components are becoming increasingly popular for packaging sensitive drugs, biologics and next generation vaccines (mRNA, adenoviral vectors). This coating provides a barrier that protects the drugs from extractables and leachables, ensuring the integrity of the drug formulation. However, there are challenges in terms of compatibility with vent tube filling methods and maintaining consistent functional performance.

To address these issues, Aptar Pharma has developed new designs of coated syringe plungers, PremiumCoat®, that promote machinability, container closure integrity, and functional performances.

In this article, Audrey Chardonnet discusses PremiumCoat® proprietary 3-rib design and coating strategy, and how it has demonstrated the ability to preserve container closure integrity, facilitate autoinjector development, and maintain low and consistent gliding and break-loose forces. Machinability testings have also confirmed compatibility with vacuum and high-speed vent tube filling lines.

PremiumCoat® syringe plungers offer manufacturers the opportunity to benefit from the ETFE coating barrier effect without compromising on functional performance, ensuring superior protection for sensitive drugs, safety and comfort for patients.
